I wanna give you a short review of the new features in Gnome 2.6:
- Spacial Nautilus: a new kind of navigation concept, abutted on the finder of MacOS X.
Tip: You can select the old browser-mode for default with gconftool-2 -s /apps/nautilus/preferences/always_use_browser -t bool TRUEBut you should give the spacial mode a try!
- New gtk_file_selector(): file-selector is completely redesigned. It is fast, very usable and clear.
Tip: Type <ctrl><l> while file-browsing to get a tab-completed prompt
- New Applet for network-activity: You can see it in the top-panel next to the common system-information-applets on the screenshots below.
- Complete arabian translation: test it by yourself by typing
LC_ALL="ar_AE" epiphany - Better support for bidirectional fonts: With the new gtk+-version there comes better support for bidirectional fonts. You can see in while using Abiword or Gnumeric
- Some other important improvements…
Here are a few nice Screenshots of Gnome 2.6 running on my Acer laptop.
In general I could say, that this is the next step for Gnome on the way to heaven ;-)
OK, stop this solemn prattling but Gnome 2.6 feels smoother than 2.4, is really faster and nautilus get`s really usable. I think it is the most comfortable desktop suite.
