xorg-x11 compiles now with propolice 0

The current Version (6.8.0) of xorg-x11 compiles now with propolice, the GCC-extension which prevents applications from stack-smashing. After really a long period, these improvement is done. Thanks to the developers.

If you use Gentoo, you can use propolice doing the following:
vim /etc/make.conf

CFLAGS=”… -fstack-protector”
Thats all.

Music Review, Vol. II 1

My current level of consuming music and Music review Vol. I intents me to create a new one. Another reason presenting Sting is the anticipation related to the Sting-concert in Stuttgart at November 7th, 2004. Today I want to review four albums of Gordon Sumner, much better known as Sting and one of Tanita Tikaram. Sting is maybe the famost artist ever lived. I say that although I hate superlatives. Every time I’m listening to Sting, I want to bow as low as I can.

<img src=”/img/CD/sting-sacred_love.png” alt=”“ align=“left” />Sting – Sacred Love
Sacred Love is the newest creation of Sting. With this album, Sting proves, that there is a difference between modern music and the normal trash, that is played by the normal radio stations. The interesting thing on albums by Sting in is every case, that the tracks on it are distinguishable. Sting masters the art of fascinating for the listener from the beginning until the end. Not only related to a piece but also related to the whole album. This is what makes his music interesting. The album Sacred Love sounds really modern, nice beats, one piece comes with a tribute to Drum ‘n Base (“Never Coming Home”, track 5), quotes of spanish-style music (“Send your love”, track 2) and my personal loveliest song on this record: “Whenever I Say Your Name”. The approvement that the label “lovesong” must not be another word for kitsch (remark for german visitors: das heißt wirklich so!). This album is a great compilation, which brings back to the listerners mind, what really universal music could be.

<img src=”/img/CD/sting-brand_new_day.png” alt=”“ align=“right” />Sting – Brand new Day
Stings most experimental work and a nice border crossing between the gaps between different cultures. It is a mix of Jazz, Ethno-elements and pure Rockmusic. The album comes like a compilation of different studio-session. An impressive piece is “Desert Rose”, where arabic elements flow into a famous carpet of sound. Cheb Mami brings with his wonderful voice orientalic spirit and to the coolish sound of Sting. This combination concluses into a wonderful final duetto.
The second impressive track is “A Thousand Years”. The near to minimalistic sound creates a chilly feeling, it snuggles with your ear like a silken pyjama and will never let you go. The last track and also the gret final of the art of Sting is “Brand New Day”. Sting can excellently show there all is quality: feeling for smooth sound, well dosed rhythm and nice arrangements. Just one word: sexy!

<img src=”/img/CD/sting-mercury_falling.png” alt=”“ align=“left” />Sting – Mercury Falling
Stings worst album I’ve ever seen. But boring on a high level. Don’t try to forget that we aren’t on the level of plastic pop. Critisizing Sting is moaning on a really high level. Highlights: “Hounds Of Winter”, smooth, smoother, that song. For all people with suicede fantasies I want to recommend “I Hung My Head”. A faster track with a swinging rhythm. You should give it a try. This album is nice anyhow.

<img src=”/img/CD/sting-fields_of_gold.png” alt=”“ align=“right” />Sting – Fields of Gold – The best of 1984-1994
How the title suggest, it is a best-of album. If you remember the period of this records and looking towards the result, you would share my impressive behaviour. First time I read the booklet I’m angry about the choices Sting made. You miss tracks like “Roxanne”, “Every Breath You Take” and many more. But the selection is higher than premium: One great piece follows another. “Englishman In New York”, “Fields Of Gold”, “Moon Over Bourbon Street” and last but not least “Russians”. The violoncello part of “Russians” would be, if I would not be atheistic, a redefinition of the idea of the christian paradise.

<img src=”/img/CD/tanita_tikaram-ancient_heart.png” alt=”“ align=“left” />Tanita Tikaram – Ancient Heart
Tanita Tikaram is the counter evidence that the occupation by the Armees of the anti-hitler-coalition wasn’t procreative. Tanita Tikaram, the doughter of a british Soldier, was born in Münster/Westfalen, Germany. A seldom case, that great music came from german province. A evidence for the theory, that not only being determines awareness but also awareness determines being (sorry for this small philosphical excursion). The Album “Ancient Heart” is her first album, released in 1988 at the age of 19. It includes her best known piece “Twist In My Sobriety”, a diffedent track in syncopical rhythm. The voice of Tanita Tikaram sound deep and wise. But not only the superhit is a wonderful piece: every track on this album has its own quality, which makes the whole album interesting.

Music Review, Vol. I 1

The last few weeks brings a heap of new experiences in my personal taste of music. So I want to introduce some albums, which are new for me.

<img src=”/img/CD/u96-das_boot.png” alt=”“ align=“left” />
U96 – Das Boot
The first techno album, which were in the top 1 of the german charts (January 1992, February 1992, March 1992 and April 1992). It is really interesting to listen to such old techno music in the year 2004. The tracks are adapted to the original soundtrack from Das Boot and sounds really imperfect. But this the charm of the music for example the dirty sounding synthesizers. The record also includes really fascinating music like “Art of U96” or “I want to be a Kennedy”. On this note: I also want to fuck with Marylin Monroe ;-)

<img src=”/img/CD/florence-poker_menteur.png” alt=”“ align=“right” />
Florence – Poker Menteur
Really nice french pop music with a kind of influence by the chanson culture. Melancholic guitar phrases alternates with the powerful voice of Florence and creates a diversified sound, which creaps in your auditory canal and leave a feeling of melancholic happiness back to you. This is the right music for the rainy harvest.

<img src=”/img/CD/mark_knopfler-shangri-la.png” alt=”“ align=“left” />
Mark Knopfler – Shangri-la
There is nothing to say but “great”. There are artists in the world, were it is a lèse-majesté if you refuse to admire the music of those. Mark Knopfler, respective the Dire Straits, is one of them. Releasing “Shangri-la” stands in direct continuity to other great albums as “Sailing to Philadelphia” or “Money for nothing”. Snugger guitar sound and the calm voice of Mark Knopfler conglomorates to a smooth sound. Highlights: “Postcards from Paraguay” (Mark Knopfler is going to learn spanish) and “All that matters”. There is just one request: make more releases but attending your medical condition, you’ve been let off hook!

<img src=”/img/arnold_schoenberg.png” alt=”“ align=“right” />
Arnold Schönberg – Transfigured Night
This record of the WDR (“Westdeutscher Rundfunk”, western german broadcast) from 1993 is an arrangement by Eduard Steuermann one of the students of Arnold Schönberg of “Transfigured Night”. It is one of the early compositions by Schönberg, which means it is tonal music, with small forecast and quotes of what would come later: The invention of twelve-tone music and the radical renunciation from the traditional sound. As a really impressive example of twelve-tone music I want to advise “A Survivor from Warsaw”.
